The trails in Mt. Tatun area are, in my opinion, the most challenging ones in Yangmingshan National Park. We took a bus to Mt. Chishing, then walked along the Bailaka road to Anbu trail entrance, from where the trail to the peak of Mt. Tatun begun. The trail was almost a straight line to the top and very steep, too. However, if comparing with the trails around Mt. Tatun South and West Peaks, it was nothing. In order to preserve the natural environment for butterflies, the trails around Mt. Tatun South and West Peaks are composed of ropes instead of stairs. We had to climb up and down with the assistance of the ropes that tighten between trees or metal poles (when there was no tree). The trails were muddy and slippery, hence one could easily tumble on them. We tumbled even with the ropes' aids.
