It turned out that I had a rather balanced selection of films from the 2008 TGHFF. I saw a masterpiece tonight from another master of the Salute to Masters Programme. The Red Circle by Jean-Pierre Melville, highly regarded as the director's "most sophisticated, most compelling, [and] most perfect film", was a detective thriller that reminded me a lot of John Woo, who, in a matter of fact, was (and still is) a big admirer of the director.Apparently, John Woo is not the only admirer. Another veteran filmmaker from Hong Kong, Johnny To, is reportedly remaking this classic film with an impressive cast such as Liam Neeson, Orlando Bloom, Yun-Fat Chow and even Alain Delon from the original film. I cannot wait to see To's remake.
