Kinmen Cycling Trip
Kinmen, administered by Republic of China, was once a stronghold during the First and Second Taiwan Straight Crisis. The archipelago had been bombarded, many houses destroyed, and precious lives taken, but ultimately it withstood the invasion of People's Liberation Army, turned the tide of Chinese Civil War and forged the status quo in Taiwan Straight.

More then 50 years latter, the place had changed from it used to be. Because of the termination of the world's longest martial law at Kinmen on 1991, the soldiers who used to be in large quantity and the major consumers of the local economy had now reduced in size and consuming power. Furthermore, the establishment of the sixth national park of R.O.C. at Kinmen on 1995 had transformed the place from an artillery shell destination to a tourist destination. The island became a living museum with its monuments, underground tunnels, and large stones inscribed with Chinese characters.

Evania and I took a three-day cycling trip at Kinmen during the new year vacation. It was a real blast, if we ignored our aching butts and sour legs. In addition to all the tourist spots, I was particularly impressed with Evania's adventurous spirits. She had never ridden a bicycle for such long hours, yet she stepped up to the challenge and finished the tour with much elegance. How I admired that she pedalled all the way up to an hill while I thought she could not make it!
